The dog behind the door

“Mad Dog” Lou didn’t learn transmissions from a manual. He learned them in the family shop, the second generation to make a living tearing down GM gearboxes and putting them back together better than the factory did.

Then he took that education to the drag strip. Years of NHRA racing teach you something a classroom never will: a transmission that’s “good enough” on paper grenades on the launch. Every weak point you ignore finds you at the worst possible moment. That’s why every Mad Dog build starts by engineering out the factory’s known flaws — the sun shell that cracks, the five-clutch drum that slips, the plastic accumulators that fail — before a single performance part goes in.

Since 1986, the process hasn’t changed: tear it down to the bare case, replace every wear part, fix what GM got wrong, and dyno-test every single unit before it ships. No transmission leaves the shop on faith.

Today that experience covers everything from the classic 700R4 to GM’s modern 8- and 10-speed automatics, and custom builds up to 1,500 horsepower. Thirty-five-plus years in, the standard is the same as day one: build it like you’re going to race it yourself.
